There’s nothing like the morning ritual of brewing a cup of piping hot coffee and sipping it slowly and intentionally. Yet sometimes the ritual itself ends up being more beneficial than the coffee itself. Maybe you’ve never really liked the taste of coffee and just like the caffeine hit, or maybe you have the opposite problem. That’s when an herbal substitute comes in. There are an unbelievable amount of coffee alternatives on the market these days, from dandelion coffee to adaptogenic mushroom blends but today we’re going to be focusing on chicory root.

Chicory is a sweet little plant with gorgeous blue flowers that belongs to the Asteraceae family, along with dandelion. This is why you may notice that the taste of dandelion root tea is quite similar to chicory root – nutty, earthy and slightly bitter. When roasted and ground, chicory root has a very similar color, texture and appearance to coffee, making it a really lovely herbal substitute. Plus, it’s high in inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria in your gut, and antioxidants which support your liver’s natural detoxification pathways. Here’s how to make it!

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 tablespoons of roasted chicory root
  • Hot water
  • Your favorite coffee mix ins (collagen, creamer, ghee, milk, cinnamon, honey, etc)

Method:

  1. Steep roasted chicory root and hot water in your French press for no more than 5-8 minutes for optimal flavor.
  2. Meanwhile, add your favorite coffee mix-ins to a separate glass. We like Metabolic Guard, a milk of choice, maple syrup, and a pinch of mineral salt here. Use a frother to blend it all up then pour both the chicory root coffee and any frothed up add-ins into your mug and enjoy your jitter-free coffee replacement!
  3. Once nice and frothy, pour the chicory brew and any add-ins into your mug and enjoy your jitter-free coffee replacement!
