Are you a slow tea and coffee drinker? Like sipping-on-that-same-cup-of-cold-morning-coffee kind of slow? If so, you’ve probably experienced the all too familiar phenomenon of watered-down iced beverages. Especially in the summertime, those first few refreshing slurps of an ice-cold drink are unmatched, but the last few, well, leave much to be desired. The solution is exceedingly simple: make frozen tea or coffee cubes. Today we’re going to focus on tea cubes because we’re in a big iced tea phase.

What You’ll Need:

  • Ice cube trays
  • Herbal tea blend(s) of choice
  • Water
  • Optional: fresh herbs or flowers for garnish

The Method:

  1. Brew up a big batch of whatever herbal tea you enjoy drinking chilled or on ice. Feel free to get creative here! You can steep a few different types of herbal teas, mix them together, or even make your own blend using whatever loose herbs or tea you have in your home apothecary. In any case, steep for 6 to 8 minutes, then let the tea(s) cool down to room temperature.
  2. Pour the room temperature tea(s) into your ice cube trays. If you’re using any edible leaves or blossoms, gently place them on top of the liquid. They will look so beautiful and ~fancy~ when they’re frozen. When finished, put the ice cube trays in the freezer to set.
  3. Next time you make yourself an iced tea or beverage, use these tea cubes instead of regular old ice cubes!

When to Use Herby Ice Cubes

  • As a replacement for ice in iced tea to keep your tea from getting watered down and tasting super weak
  • To add flavor to a glass of lemonade. This gives a sort of Arnold Palmer vibe when the tea cubes start to melt!
  • For a dose of herbal medicine in your water or sparkling water
  • To elevate a mocktail or cocktail with a level of complexity and herbaceousness
