Published February 6, 2017 As you may know, I’m obsessed with using healing clays! Bentonite is my go-to for face masks because of its powerful drawing effect that pulls positively charged toxins from the skin. However, bentonite clay is so strong that it can be a little drying to the hair – so I prefer Rhassoul, or red Moroccan clay for hair masks. Rhassoul still binds to toxins, but also has moisturizing and softening properties. It reduces dryness in the hair while removing chemical/product buildup, improves hair elasticity, and unblocks your scalp’s pores. What is Rhassoul Clay? This natural mineral-rich clay has been mined in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco since the 8th century. It is traditionally combined with water to clean the body and has been used daily by Moroccan women for centuries to replace both soap and shampoo. Rhassoul clay can increase skin elasticity, reduce blemishes and blackheads, and reduce skin/scalp dryness or flakiness. Rhassoul vs. Bentonite Clay Rhassoul is unique from other clays in that it boasts a much higher mineral content – especially silica, but also potassium, magnesium & calcium. This makes it extremely beneficial for remineralizing and conditioning. Silica is essential for preventing hair loss & stimulating new growth.Rhassoul clay is the moisturizer and softener, while bentonite on the other hand is the detoxifier.Rhassoul reduces dryness in the hair while also removing toxins and product buildup. It nourishes the actual hair shaft and helps to gently unclog your scalp’s pores.Bentonite has a much stronger pulling effect and binds more powerfully to build up, dirt, and oil. You can actually feel it pulsing when applied to the face and skin! This can be somewhat harsh on sensitive skin so I prefer the moisturizing qualities of Rhassoul for my scalp. Benefits of Rhassoul Clay Rhassoul helps to cut down on hair loss & shedding. Premature hair loss is often associated with inflammation and candida/fungus (as seen in dandruff, scalp psoriasis & eczema). When the scalp is inflamed, it cannot support the growth of strong, long hair. Rhassoul binds to and removes the toxins, microbes, fungi & dead skin contributing to the inflammation in the first place, allowing your hair to grow without irritation. It also improves hair elasticity, aids in detangling, reduces frizz, and supports curl definition. Hair Mask Recipe ✔️1/2 cup Rhassoul clay✔️approx. 1/2 cup aloe vera juice (adjust to make a pudding-like texture)✔️2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (balances pH)✔️2 tbsp jojoba, olive, OR argan oil✔️10 drops essential oil of choiceWet hair. Starting at roots, massage a handful of the clay mixture into the scalp (like you would a shampoo) and work down to your ends. Repeat until all hair is coated. Leave 5-10 minutes (do not let dry!) and rinse out with warm water. Enjoy!
